Of today's modern inventions and conveniences, the US airline industry carrying 746 million passengers as of 2012 and logging more than 800 billion passenger miles, might be the most innovative.

Since the dawn of the commercial jet age in the late 1950s airlines have transformed to how people travel for business and pleasure. Nearly any point on the globe is accessible within hours. Air travel is also one of the safest modes of transport: according to MIT statistics flying has become so reliable that a person could fly every day for 123,000 years before having a fatal accident.
